Why do all those locations have similar names ?
New map: July 13, 2016
The mountain upper right is Loner Mountain.
This is a story of Seko’s Ego… and how everyone dealt with it…
Seko and Sedge lived many years ago.
Seko wanted to call everything Seko after himself. It was pointed out that if he named all trees and hills Seko, folks might not be at the correct Seko to hear one of his speeches.
So there is a Seko Village, Seko Stream with two branches, Seko Mountain, Seko Hills, Seko Road, but there are two forests. Seko Forest East and Seko Forest West. Notice the two small streams coming out of Seko Forest East ? Yes, they are named Seko Stream East and Seko Stream West, but neither are in Seko Forest West. There are ponds as the headwater of each stream. Named after Seko, of course. Seko Pond West and Seko Pond East, attached to the appropriate Seko Stream.
But Seko never named the farmlands after himself, the farmers had pitchforks.
Sedge has a passage into Grand Harbour named after Sedge. Along with Sedge Keep. The forest used to be called Sedge Forest, but after Sedge died it was called Gone Forest. And Sedge Lighthouse is abandoned and doesn’t presently have a name. A possible adventure area. I’ll think about working on it.
Why not change them to other names ? Someone, or some thing, that looks like Seko shows up if a name change is proposed. Sometimes as a person who can be touched, sometimes as an upset voice, and sometimes as a ghostly figure. Doesn’t have to be a public announcement… and the person or persons change their minds and leave it being called Seko after such a visit.
Sedge doesn’t appear, but as Sedge was the only one who apparently put a stop to Seko’s naming things, the items named after Sedge continue to be left that way, with the 3 above exceptions.
Yell village ? Yes, they go over and yell at the folks in Silent Castle. Still do to. They yelled at Seko to, when he tried to rename their village to Seko’s Other Village. What it was actually called, pre-Seko, is gone forever.
Just anybody yelling ? No, its a group of twelve people elected to the Yell. A very prestigious office.
The Twelve Yell of Yell Village. It worked for them. Seko left the area not long after the Twelve Yell yelled a him when he arrived at Yell Village.
There is much Pomp and Circumstance associated with this office. Gold braid, small bells on finely carved walking sticks, felt shoes, and other fine clothes.
Town Criers are just not in the same league as The Twelve Yell of Yell Village.
Some say Seko was going to rename Great River to Seko’s Great River… but a water spirit got upset and grabbed and tossed Seko into the river. Well, that is one of the stories told to explain Seko’s leaving and never returning. There are others, equally believable. Hmmm… but water spirits do live in the Great River.
farm land: corn, apricots, apples, cattle, vegetables, other typical farm animals
forests: several forests
water: streams, several rivers, bays, fishing is good
mountains: 3 mountain ranges. Several lone peaks
typical terrain: mostly flat, good farm land. Cities, towns, and castles are well kept. Southeast part is desolate, ruins. And old evil ruins on Spill Island.
Part of the Torlo Sea Mount is shallow enough to provide a home for various fish. Making it a prime location for a fishing ground.
The two deeps have not been explored.
A rumor on the islands is that there was an early conflict between the fishermen and some one or some thing living in the deeps.
The fishermen and a magic-user were able to make a treaty with whomever or whatever lives down there due to them not eating the same fish.
Some months the sea mount is off limits to the fishing fleet.
There have been some minor conflicts over the centuries, but the majority of the time peace is here.
Woe to the Slaver or Pirate ship that attacks these fishermen.
Updated map on July 7, 2016.
The Tek and Beggars Woods are the danger areas. No beggars live in that forest. The name comes from orcs, who claimed they were begging, not robbing from, everyone else on the island.
Yeg is the city and sea port of the island.
I might adjust the populations at a later date. Note that most towns have higher
populations in my game world than the equivalent would be on Earth during
the Middle Ages. Crestar is not a parallel Earth.
total population is about 120,000 in the villages, towns, and cities. This doesn’t
include monsters. Single tree symbols represent a small area of trees, from
1-10 acres.
Tantalow’s Island is about 260,000 square miles
Cities: Wasto (15,000 seaport) ; Shessor ( 18,000 seaport) ;
Chelo (19,000 capital)
Towns: Lower ( kinda near Lower Dhin Mts. ) (4,000) ;
Upper (near Dhin Mts.) (4,500) ; Sta (3,600)
Villages: Field (2,000) ; Seltah ; Oro (2,450) ;
Seko (2,000) ; Yell (2,600)
Small villages: Kha (1,200) ; Sedo (1,100) ; Blue (900)
Star Island is about 14,700 square miles
City: Yeg (9,000) ; Town: Sea Star (3,000)
Villages: Gert (2,300) ; Rak (450) ; Setto (750) ; Keep: Sarn and 3 watch towers
Sea Star is the seaport ; Yeg has only an easily defended port area for resupply.
Beggar Woods is about 30 miles across.
Spill Island is about 9,800 square miles
City: Way Ton (7,000) ; Town: Way Ut (3,000)
Village: Spill (1,950) ; several small planting/harvest villages
Way Ut is the sea port. Way Ton has no ships.
The smaller villages on these islands have from 150-325 people. Some of the homlets, with a population of 50 and under, are there mainly as planting and harvest villages. There are caretakers, with the population increasing as folks arrive to plant crops or harvest food grown here. There are also many homlets of less than 100 people that are not mapped.
Roads:
Dar goes from Tarag Castle, Dar Castle, then Wasto past Field and Danno Castle and
ends at a watch tower
Tago goes from the west end of Tantalow’s Island past Yell,
Monto Crater, over the Great River, past Oro, over Loner River
and over to Sedo, Lower, and Kha, past Chelo and Karno Keep,
and ends at Tago City.
Lower Tago is less traveled. It goes from Tago Road over the
lower Loner River, to Blue, then lower Great River and stops
near the coast towards a lonely watch tower. For some reason,
many folks act like its unlucky to travel on Lower Tago Road.
Passages to Grand Harbor: While all 3 easily accommodate ships, Dar is over 3,000 feet deep. Strange rip currents can cause problems in Dar Passage for all but the sturdiest of ships.
one acre is: 4,840 sq yds; 43,560 sq ft.; 1/640 sq mi. For purposes of acres on these islands, they are 200’ × 217.8’. One acre equals 0.4047 hectares.
